We’re just over one month away from our first market of the season! Since we saw you last, we’ve grown and incorporated cover crops to help nourish the soil with nitrogen rich organic matter and cut down on root knot nematodes. we’ve also added a number of soil amendments like potassium, magnesium, sulfur, and nitrogen to perfectly balance our soil based on the soil tests that we ran in May. We try to improve our soil every year so that our crops are more healthy, abundant and nutritious as each year passes. When we first broke ground on the farm in 2016 the soil had very little nutrients or organic matter, but through adding mulch, cover crops, and organic soil amendments we have seen a dramatic improvement in the health of our soil and the soil life such as earthworms.
In August we returned to the farm full time. We measured our fields and prepared our soil using our walk behind tractor. We have planted okra, lalo, squash, cucumbers, malabar spinach, green beans, eggplant, and basil in the fields and have seeded a lot more in our greenhouse. Most of our beds will be planted by the end of the month.
As we near fall we look forward to the changing of the seasons, the cooler weather, the abundant fields of vegetables, and the 2022-23 market season. We have a lot of events and activities coming this year. We hope to see you at the farm soon!
